Having arrived we are now on day 3 and it is fair to say we won’t moan about the cold winter in the UK again! Every 1/2hr or so, inbetween beautiful sunshine, the wind jumped to 50mph+, creating a wind chill of -12C, and it snowed, which was blown into your face so hard it hurt. Nevertheless, being intrepid travellers with an AWD car, we used the very useful Icelandic road warning system (all northern countries should do this) and visited Thingvellir national park, which was beautiful. A partially frozen waterfall and amazing vistas were the highlight.
We returned to Reykjavik and spent some time in the city including seeing the famous Church, the Sun Voyager sculpture and the Harpa concert hall, which has a 4D volcano ride with extensive drone (or something like that) footage of the eruptions from 2021-2024….spectacular. We also tried Rye bread ice cream….who knew.
Off to the Blue Lagoon and the Bridge Between Continents (literally) today.
