Wilderness

We are sitting in coffee shop (shock) in Corner Brook, NL, as we type this, having spent further time in St John’s, then driven to Gander and then to here, around 750km but that doesn’t really matter as the wilderness is spectacular. It is generally snow covered (but not deep by their standards)…forests, frozen lakes, frozen sea (seriously large areas!!!!!) and small towns.

Before leaving St John’s we walked around a windswept trail on Signal Hill and were able to see a Bald Eagle on the nest. A truly amazing and grounding experience.

Gander was interesting because of the airport and 9/11 connections. Small place entirely built around the airport 🛬, and amazingly was a major hub used by commercial airlines (Western and Eastern block) until jets were able to reach US/Canadian/European/Cuban cities without refuelling.

We stopped off at a small town called Springdale – think of the film Cocoon – to visit a beach called “Glassy beach”, which has a huge amount of sea glass….but we didn’t quite make it. When the snow on the trail reached our knees we realised we needed to stop 😄. Gem feel over, once when she was standing still 🤔, amazingly Si didn’t!

Last night we stayed at a beautiful little place under Marble Mountain. Later today we drive to Stephenville, NL, drop the car off and catch the overnight ferry to Nova Scotia. Au revoir NL you have been a great introduction to Canada.
